Week 19 (March 10) College Basketball AP Poll Predictions: Kansas Moves Outside The Top 10
ByI figured I'd write a preview top 25 while we await what could be a delayed official version (comes out every Monday around noon) from the Associated Press given the rash of upsets/losses in the top 25 since last Monday, in order: Duke, Virginia, Syracuse, Kansas, Wisconsin, Creighton, North Carolina, Iowa State, Connecticut, SMU, Memphis, New Mexico, Michigan State, Iowa, and Kentucky. In total, 15 of the top 25 supposed best teams in the nation went down, some mathematically so when two ranked teams happened to play each other (Duke-UNC, SMU-Louisville, SDSU-UNM, Memphis-SMU, Connecticut-Louisville, Michigan State-Iowa). Here's my preview list (tough week) with a few comments at the end
1. Florida (29-2, 18-0)
2. Wichita State (34-0, 18-0)
3. Villanova (28-3, 16-2)
4. Arizona (28-3, 15-3)
5. Syracuse (27-4, 14-4)
6. Louisville (26-5, 15-3)
7. Duke (24-7, 13-5)
8. Virginia (25-6, 16-2)
9. Michigan (23-7, 15-3)
10. San Diego State (27-3, 16-2)
11. Kansas (23-8, 14-4)
12. Wisconsin (25-6, 12-6)
13. Cincinnati (26-5, 15-3)
14. North Carolina (23-8, 13-5)
15. Creighton (24-6, 14-4)
16. Memphis (23-8, 12-6)
17. Iowa State (23-7, 11-7)
18. Michigan State (23-8, 12-6)
19. Oklahoma (23-8, 12-6)
20. Connecticut (24-7, 12-6)
21. New Mexico (24-6, 15-3)
22. Saint Louis 26-5, 13-3)
23. SMU (23-8, 12-6)
24. Kentucky (22-9, 12-6)
25. Ohio State (23-8, 10-8)
Toughest calls: Ordering Arizona, Syracuse, Louisville, Duke, and Virginia was cheeky but I think I got it right. Louisville's 33-point win over Connecticut (and a previous win over SMU) has to make them the UVA of this week's poll for the week's biggest jump, from 11 to 6. Sorting through the bottom list was equally as difficult, for most of those teams lost without any teams below them deserving to take their spot. The only new team to join the top 25 was Ohio State, who reached 25 on the heels of their recent upset of Michigan State. They replaced Iowa, now with 11 losses and a .500 conference record (20-11, 9-9).
Most satisfying switch: Pushing Kansas outside the top 10 felt nice...and just. The Jayhawks have been dropping games consistently since their torrid conference run and deserve to sit behind San Diego State and Michigan. If they don't win the conference tournament, they'll be sweating out a two seed for the NCAA Tournament.
