DETROIT —Apple Inc. and Michigan State University (MSU) have announced a collaboration to establish the Apple Manufacturing Academy in downtown Detroit. This initiative aims to assist small and medium-sized businesses nationwide in adopting advanced manufacturing techniques and enhancing operational efficiency.
Scheduled to commence operations in the summer of 2025, the academy will offer both in-person and online courses. The curriculum is designed to equip participants with essential skills, including project management, manufacturing process optimization, vocational training, and leadership development. Apple engineers and MSU experts will provide consultations to businesses on integrating artificial intelligence and smart manufacturing practices.
Sabih Khan, Apple's Senior Vice President of Operations, emphasized the company's dedication to fostering innovation within the U.S. manufacturing sector. "The Apple Manufacturing Academy will train businesses across America to implement smart manufacturing techniques that are creating opportunity and shaping the future of technology," Khan stated.
MSU President Kevin M. Guskiewicz highlighted the alignment of this project with the university's mission. "With our strong programs in supply chain, logistics, engineering, and packaging, and our commitment to be an industry leader in AI advancements, Michigan State is a perfect partner for this new effort," Guskiewicz said. "We look forward to working side by side with manufacturing companies to transform this essential industry."
This initiative builds upon the successful partnership between Apple and MSU, which began with the launch of the Apple Developer Academy in Detroit in 2021. That program has since graduated approximately 200 participants annually, focusing on coding, design, and business skills within the tech industry.
The establishment of the Apple Manufacturing Academy is part of Apple's broader commitment to invest over $500 billion in the U.S. over the next four years. This investment includes the creation of approximately 20,000 jobs and the expansion of teams and facilities across multiple states.
The Apple Manufacturing Academy represents a significant step in advancing manufacturing education and practices in the United States. By leveraging the expertise of Apple and MSU, the academy aims to empower businesses with the tools and knowledge necessary to thrive in an increasingly complex and technology-driven industry landscape.
