Kamala Harris and Donald Trump will finally go head to head this November 5, 2024 election, with several schools across the nation preparing to close for the day. Here are what schools will be open and closed for the US 2024 elections.

Are Schools Open on US 2024 Elections?

Some schools during US elections are closed since it's recognized as a public holiday in only 14 states. The 14 states that observe Election Day as a public holiday, like Maryland, Illinoi, and New York, will not have their schools open.

Other reasons, however, include safety concerns and a matter of convenience due to road closures and district plans.

According to USA Today, schools that will not hold classes on US 2024 elections is due to institutions being a polling area, although situations vary over administration decisions and the palace itself. As an example, the Houston Independent School District, the largest public school in Texas, will keep the school open while also accommodating polling activities. At the same time, they've also made preparations to ensure the safety and security of students while allowing voters to access polls.

Is Election Day a Federal Holiday?

Now, although election day is considered a public holiday, it's not a federal one. Meaning, there is no mandate that allows state and private employees to take the day off to vote. Not all recognizes this law and some states see it as a holiday where employees can receive paid time off, and it can even affect how schools operate.

There's still an ongoing debate about whether schools should remain as polling places, considering the violent reactions from the losing team, or the January 6 capitol attack. Additionally, TODAY noted that since local schools often serve as the place where people will vote, it can create traffic issues during school hours, therefore, complicating school drop-off and pick-up times.

Districts that do not recognize it as a public holiday would often opt to cancel classes for the day to avoid such situation.

Again, not all schools will be closed, so it's advised that parents should check their specific school district's calendar to confirm whether classes will be held on November 5 to avoid travel complications.
