Raven Syed, an 18-year-old sophomore majoring in actuarial science at Rider University, was found dead in a campus residence hall on Monday.

Syed, who also worked as a finite mathematics tutor at the Academic Success Center and a copy editor for the New Jersey university's student newspaper, enjoyed music, martial arts and learning foreign languages, according to his Rider News staff biography.

"As we process Raven's passing, let us come together with compassion, offering comfort and strength to those who are hurting," Rider President Gregory Dell'Omo wrote in the email announcing Syed's death, according to The Rider News.

On Monday, students observed a large presence of Lawrence Police and Rider Public Safety officers near Kroner Hall, where Syed lived on the third floor.

Officers at the scene did not provide details on the investigation, the publication said, but a 4:12 p.m. advisory assured students and staff that there was no threat to the community.

Dell'Omo notified the community of the student's death on Monday night. The Rider News said it would publish a digital tribute to Syed on Wednesday. in lieu of a full issue.
