A community is mourning the death of the 2024 Miss Teen Rodeo Kansas, who died in a car accident on Friday that also injured four of her college equestrian teammates.

"Emma was a true gem and horsewoman who embodied what it meant to be a rodeo queen, always going above and beyond what was expected of her," the Miss Rodeo Kansas Pageant wrote in a Facebook post. "We will miss her contagious smile and one in a million personality."

Emma Brungardt, 19, a Colby Community College Sophomore majoring in horse management and production, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, authorities said.

According to the New York Post, a pickup truck driver was driving south on a rural Kansas road when he cut "between the Y striking a tree row," causing the vehicle to flip. The driver and four surviving passengers were sent to Citizens Medical Center in Colby for minor injuries.

Brungardt was wearing a seatbelt, according to the KHP crash log.

"As a first-generation cowgirl, Emma has immersed herself in the western way of life becoming involved in FFA in high school and coming in the Kansas Wild Horse Youth Challenge for 4 years, winning grand champion in 2019 and 2021," her Miss Rodeo Kansas profile reads. "She competed in the Kansas High School Rodeo Association for 2 years."

"Emma was a sweet soul who picked up other people and always had a positive attitude," the Colby CC Rodeo Team wrote on Facebook.
