A 22-year-old student reportedly died by suicide on Wednesday in front of bystanders at the Portland State University campus.
The incident happened at Parking Structure 1 in the 1800 block of Southwest Broadway at approximately 1:25 p.m., according to Oregon Live News. The individual was not identified.
In addition to informing staff and students about the incident, university officials offered counseling services and support for students who were feeling overwhelmed by their assignments. Monday marked the start of fall classes.
Witnesses to the incident or anyone who would benefit from mental health care were also encouraged to seek it out.
"We're deeply saddened by this news and acknowledge witnessing death can be a traumatic experience," the school's message read. "Our thoughts are with their family and friends at this difficult time."
