Indiana University has launched an investigation into a former team physician following accusations from a former men's basketball player, who claims the doctor conducted "inappropriate prostate and rectal exams" during physicals.

The former player, who competed for IU several decades ago, has claimed that Dr. Brad Bomba Sr.'s examinations were a regular practice during his time with the team.

According to the allegations, all student-athletes under Bomba's care were subjected to similar exams, which the player believes were unnecessary and inappropriate.

The university has hired the international law firm Jones Day to conduct a comprehensive, independent investigation. The firm plans to review witness testimony and determine whether the procedures were within the standard of care at the time and whether university officials were aware of any misconduct, according to a Wednesday statement from school officials.

"This is a fully independent and comprehensive investigation that will follow the facts," the university said. "Indiana University will abide by its findings and take any warranted actions."
