Temple University students are on edge after two violent robberies occurred Monday night, just as the new school year is kicking off.
The first incident happened at the intersection of 11th Street and Montgomery Avenue, where a student was attacked and robbed by three juveniles, according to the Temple University Police Association. Another student was assaulted at the Broad and Cecil B. Moore Avenue subway station, also by a group of three young suspects who made off with his backpack.
Temple University Police and the Philadelphia Police Department quickly apprehended the three suspects, who were identified as two 13-year-olds and a 15-year-old. Shortly after, Temple Police responded to reports of a shooting on North 18th Street, but no injuries were found.
"We urge all students and faculty to exercise caution and remain vigilant while on campus. Your safety is our priority," Temple police wrote in a Facebook post.
Despite the incidents coming just a day before freshmen moved to campus, Police Chief Temple Police Chief Jennifer Griffin told WPVI News that the university is reporting a significant drop in crime compared to last year.
"One of those advancements we've made is license plate readers; several are located throughout campus. Within just weeks of installing it, we made an apprehension of an individual in a stolen vehicle. We were able to return that vehicle to the owner," she told the outlet.
