Rockhurst University To Break Ground On New $25 Million Academic Building
ByRockhurst University in Missouri is breaking ground Friday on a new $25 million academic building, The Kansas City Star reported.
Named after a highly-regarded former superior general of the Society of Jesus, Pedro Arrupe, S.J., Hall is expected to open in fall 2015. The 68,000 square-foot building will incorporate the latest technology for the 3,000 students attending the Catholic university, The Kansas City Star reported.
"The new building is designed to highlight the principles at the core of a Jesuit education," Matt Heinrich, associate vice president for facilities and technology at the university, said in a statement. "That includes the learning spaces themselves. The idea behind this entire building is to optimize collaboration and student engagement."
When completed, the new classroom building will house the majority of Rockhurst University's undergraduate and graduate-level classes, as well as the McMeel Family Gallery.
"The building is the result of a $25 million fundraising campaign, with generous donations from many donors. The completion of that campaign qualified the University for a $500,000 Challenge Grant from the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation in Tulsa, Okla.," school officals said in a press release.
The building was designed by Gould Evans Architects. J.E. Dunn will serve as the general contractor for the project.
The project is the latest phase of a $54 million master plan launched in 2010. The next phase calls for converting a 500-seat auditorium into a theater with production facilities to accommodate events on the 55-acre campus.
"The construction of Pedro Arrupe S.J. Hall represents a significant step forward for Rockhurst University," Rev. Thomas B. Curran, president of Rockhurst, told The Kansas City Star. "[This proves] once again that we are in the city for good. We are grateful for our generous community of donors."
