Several southern universities have announced closures or storm warnings ahead of Hurricane Debby, a Category 1 storm that made landfall in Florida on Monday morning.
The National Hurricane Center predicted "historic heavy rainfall" across southeast Georgia and the South Carolina coast, and dangerous storm surges in Florida, with flooding and tropical storm conditions traveling up through North Carolina and Virginia through the weekend.
Florida State University announced that its Tallahassee campus would be closed until 11 p.m. on Monday, while the University of Florida closed its campus and canceled classes until Tuesday.
In Georgia, Albany State University, Valdosta State University and Wiregrass Georgia Technical College canceled classes for Monday as well.
South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster, meanwhile, issued a state of emergency Sunday evening. The University of South Carolina has not announced any closures, but did issue a severe thunderstorm warning Sunday for its Columbia campus and for the school community to seek immediate shelter.
Parts of Georgia and South Carolina could get 10 to 20 inches of rain, the hurricane center said, while Florida and southeastern North Carolina could get 6 to 12 inches of rain.
