A trip to the Grand Canyon ended in tragedy earlier this week after a college student visiting the wonder of the world fell to his death in what park rangers are describing as an accidental fall.
The body of Abel Joseph Mejia, 20, was recovered by park rangers on Wednesday, about a quarter of a mile away from the Pipe Creek overlook, after the communications center recieved a call that morning about a visitor who fell from the rim.
Park rangers say Mejia was standing close to the edge when he suffered an "accidental fall," adding that the National Park service is conducting an investigation.
In a facebook post, the Indiana Bible College of Indianapolis identified Mejia as a student.
"We feel deep sadness due to the tragic loss of one of our students, Abel Mejia. Abel lost his life yesterday in an accident while visiting the Grand Canyon. He was known for his warm smile and gentle spirit, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him," the university wrote.
