College football player Andre Seldon Jr. was found dead Saturday after drowning in an apparent cliff-diving accident.
The 22-year-old cornerback was a recent transfer from New Mexico State University and was poised to start playing for Utah State University in the fall, the school said in a statement.
The Cache County Sheriff's Office was called to Porcupine Dam on Saturday afternoon on reports of a young man diving from the cliffs into the water and not resurfacing.
Dive teams located a body around 9 p.m., almost seven hours after the search began. The sheriff's office did not immediately identify the man, but Utah State officials later confirmed it to be Seldon.
"Our initial investigation leads us to believe this is a tragic accident as multiple witnesses recount the same information," the sheriff's office said. "Our heartfelt condolences go to family and friends of the student athlete."
The school and football communities are mourning Seldon's sudden death, with interim head coach Nate Dreiling saying the program was "heartbroken to have to endure the loss of one of our own."
"Having had a previous relationship with Andre during our time together at New Mexico State, I can tell you he was an incredible person and teammate," he said. "Our condolences and prayers go out to Andre's family as we grieve with them over this tremendous loss."
Utah State said it is offering emotional and mental support for the athletics staff and student-athletes at this time. New Mexico State and the University of Michigan, where Seldon played football in 2020, both offered their condolences on social media on Sunday.
