When it comes to hitting a baseball, Jameis Winston knows he can't simply rely on his athleticism. Lucky for him, he's also got a low 90s heater and is a better pitching prospect at this point in his career.
Winston entered today's exhibition against what appeared to be mostly Yankees spring training hopefuls in the fifth inning, ESPN reported. Rather than take the mound, he went to the outfield, where he once made the best throw (nailing a runner at third base) his coach, who's been at Florida State for 35 years, has ever seen. At bat, however, he went 0-2 with a strikeout -- nothing to worry about compared to the span of a baseball season, but a microcosm of Winston's hitting record. Last year, he batted in the low .200s
"I gotta get better with the bat," Winston told ESPN. "I been struggling this spring, but that's baseball, man. When you get back in the rhythm, you can go 0-for-2 with two strikeouts, but I only got one, so that's the only positive I got out of the day."
Not only is Winston a better pitcher (he's thrown four shutout innings in relief in the Seminoles' first six exhibition games), but his coach believes that's the surest way to support his two-sport life. If it hasn't yet been stated, Winston won the (last) BCS National Championship earlier this year.
"I really believe it's going to be easier for him playing two sports to develop as a pitcher/quarterback than he would as an outfielder/quarterback," Mike Martin, FSU's coach, told MLB.com "But like Deion, you don't put anything past these unbelievable athletes. He liable to say, 'I want to play outfield. I want to play quarterback' and go out there and accomplish it. But from an experience standpoint, I got to say pitching/quarterback is easier, because there is so much involved in being an everyday player."
Plus, Winston isn't the fastest player, so he'd have to either develop a lofty average over formidable power to ever really contribute as an everyday outfielder.
"I probably have more success in football, but baseball is a passion of mine and I want to play as long as possible," Winston said.
