Florida Vs. Kentucky Preview And Live Stream Link: Wildcats Need Big Win In Weak SEC
ByIt's a decent Saturday in men's college basketball. The 9:00 pm EST (ESPN) matchup between #3 Florida (22-2, 11-0) and #14 Kentucky (19-5, 9-2) represents the day's best.
Their first meeting comes at an ideal time for fans - and at an ideal place. The higher ranked Gators remain undefeated in the conference, and have won 16 in a row overall. Kentucky hasn't been quite as good, but they've won their last four and seven of their last eight. They'll get the Gators at home for a much needed quality win, given the relatively weak SEC (only Florida and Kentucky are ranked). At least Florida has their sterling record, which will remain so even with a loss. A sixth loss without a chance for another redeeming win until a rematch at Florida on the last day of the regular season is going to hurt the Wildcats in the standings.
Calipari was up to his usual word games, predicting the Gators are going to try and "smash" them even though they've smashed just a few conference opponents; recently, they've held off Tennessee, Alabama, and Missouri by 9, 9, and 10 points after a 33-point beat down of Texas A&M (14-10, 5-6). I'd imagine Florida will be just content to win at Kentucky.
"This game will tell us where we are," Calipari told ESPN. "I would imagine they (the Gators) are coming in not to just win, they want to smash. We're going to find out. There have been games where the other team came in excited and we weren't able to withstand the beginning of the game and got down so far early that even though the rest of the game we won, we didn't win by enough. ...
They know it's a hard game, they know what we're up against. This team could be the No. 1 team in the country and they've got (four) seniors."
Freshman Julius Randle will be one to watch in this one, especially against Florida's physical front line of Casey Prather, Patrick Young, and now fellow freshman Chris Walker. Since starting the year as a 20-10 guy, he's planted himself into the more earthly world of 15-10.
As much as I resent the respect Kentucky gets because of its players despite its five losses and weak conference, I'm going to pick them (-2) because I'm equally tired of watching Florida play inferior opponents close.
