UConn vs USF Preview/LIVE Radio Broadcast: Huskies to Soon Begin Tough Stretch to End the Season

By

If the UConn Huskies (24) want to stay in the AP top 25, they will likely need to win Wednesday night against the South Florida Bulls.

After facing South Florida, UConn will play Memphis (20) Saturday for its third game of the week. After that, the Huskies will see SMU (23) and Cincinnati (10) before finishing their season against Louisville (13).

South Florida is 3-8 in AAC play this season, but have played surprisingly well on the road, going 5-3 and beating teams like Temple and UCF.

In his senior season, guard Shabazz Napier has took charge of UConn men and led the team with 17 points per game, 5.9 rebounds and 5.6 assists. The last time he scored less than 10 points was Dec. 6 when he played just 22 minutes and scored seven in a 95-68 rout of Maine.

Coach Kevin Ollie said the team's six AAC victories have been the result of solid team play.

"We rebounded and got out on the fast break and Lasan was terrific," Ollie said of Sunday's win over UCF, according to ESPN. "I think he got four steals and made some amazing layups. Everybody was running, playing together and playing unselfish."

USF is 0-6 against ranked opponents this year and are on the wrong end of a 10-2 series advantage held by the Huskies. The last time USF beat UConn, Napier had to miss the game with an injured foot.

USF lost at home to Rutgers before beating UCF in overtime 79-78. Prior to that, USF beat SMU 78-71 and held Cincinnati to 50 in a loss where the team could only muster 45.

UConn has not had a large dose of ranked opponents this season and lost its most recent two contests against such teams. To compete for the AAC title, they will have to come away with a win Wednesday night and finish their schedule strong.
