FSU Sigma Chi Hazing: 4 Fraternity Members Arrested on Misdemeanor Charges Stemming from October Investigation
ByFour members of Florida State University's (FSU) chapter of the Sigma Chi fraternity were arrested on misdemeanor hazing charges for forcing pledges to consume a high volume of alcohol in one night.
According to the Tallahassee Democrat, police opened an investigation in Oct. when FSU's director of Greek life Robyn Brock received an anonymous tip concerning a pledge. According to court documents, the tip was from a woman who expressed concern for a student rushing for Sigma Chi.
Campus police conducted 65 interviews, which included witnesses and suspects and led to the arrests of Michael Salem, 21; Charles Kalb, 19; Alex Lavene, 21; and Tyler Linabury, 21.
Charged with misdemeanor hazing, the arrest report said the four young men failed to intervene during instances of hazing at parties, tailgates and other fraternity events. As for the student implicated in the anonymous tip, he was allegedly forced to tape a bottle of vodka to one hand and a bottle of rum to the other and then to drink from them.
This is a game called "Edward forty-hands" and pledges were told to drink their bottle before the others playing the game.
At the beginning of the investigation, FSU placed the chapter on disciplinary action. They were not able to hold social gatherings, chapter meetings and could not initiate new members. These restrictions will remain in place until the school can review a report to determine if the students broke any rules in the Student Code of Conduct.
"Essentially, the chapter cannot do anything until they have a judicial hearing," Brock told the Tallahassee Democrat. "Due to state and federal privacy laws, the university cannot comment on the students' status or any disciplinary action."
FSU will now wait for a police report or a probable-cause report becomes available. At that time, the school will review it to determine if any conduct code violations were committed.
