Ever heard of a subject about the world's most favorite artists? A lot of US college courses actually tackle pop culture topics from hit movies to popular books. Below are five of these unusual but very interesting matters of discussion for modern students.

Topics in American Studies: Politicizing Beyoncé

Believe it or not, this is a legitimate US college course. It was first introduced by assistant professor Kevin Allred at Rutgers University last 2010. Per USA Today, the subject description posted in the school's website says it "attempts to think through contemporary US society." It intends to analyze the music and career of famous singer Beyoncé Giselle Knowles Carter.

Reel' Faith and Fantasy Religion: Exploring Religion in 'Game of Thrones'

Per Thrillist Entertainment, Professor Roy Fuller started this subject at the University of Louisville. Here, students try to dissect the brilliant work of George R.R. Martin and understand its cultural influence to man. Interestingly, the class requires watching several episodes of "Game of Thrones" over and over again. Its course description states that students should learn "how religion function in this fantasy world" and compare it to today's religious "exclusivism and intolerance."

The Boy Who Lived, All Grown Up: Assessing the Harry Potter Books and their Adaptations

The University of Maryland actually tells students to create a proposal of a personal adaptation of the series. Dr. Michelle Butler teaches the course, discussing related games, movies, and even memes. On the other hand, Otis College and Appalachian State University also offer the "Harry Potter" subject.

Lady Gaga and the Sociology of Fame

University of South Carolina sociology professor Mathieu Defiem decided to make a subject about Lady Gaga after watching the singer perform on "The Tonight Show" almost eight years ago. Defiem told the administration that Lady Gaga is someone who affects people in a very intense manner. While this course is no longer offered in the said university, it focused on the artist's road to fame with special units in her creative costumes.

The Politics of Kanye West: Black Genius and Sonic Aesthetics

Last but not the least is the political impact of Kanye's music and fashion to the world. The University of Washington offers this course under Dr. Jeffrey McCune. It teaches about fame, gender, sexuality, and race.
