Arizona Vs. Utah Preview And Live Stream: Wildcats Face Another Above Average (But Not Great) Conference Opponent
By#1 Arizona (19-0, 6-0) has been off the national radar lately, save for a minor blip in a semi-contested win versus Colorado (15-6, 4-4) on Thursday and a narrow victory at UCLA (15-4, 4-2), called by the great Bill Walton on Jan. 9. That's what happens when you play in the PAC-12, failing to make a case for anything better than the worst major conference in college basketball.
If the Wildcats continue to win, their profile will rise to their ability level (high) and their games will gradually gain more followers, even if they're against unranked opponents. Could this be the year two teams (along with 20-0 Wichita State) finish undefeated?
At least the PAC-12 has a variety of above average challengers, typified by the Wildcats' opponent tonight (8:00 pm EST on FS1), Utah (14-5, 3-4). Similar to Colorado, UCLA, and Arizona State, the Utes have a solid non-conference record and a decent to mediocre league mark. Besides California (14-5, 5-1), the rest of the league has been beaten up by each other; as a result, none are currently ranked, a reality that will likely persist when the new polls are released some time tomorrow.
My dad mentioned earlier today he hadn't seen much of Arizona this year, to which I replied strongly, "they're good," upon which I expanded, "they have a nicely constructed offense, a great passer in T.J. McConnell, a slasher/scorer/shooter in Nick Johnson (Wooden Watch list), a tough post player in Kaleb Tarczewski, and two exciting forwards with unlimited potential in Aaron Gordon (Wooden Award watch list) and Brandon Ashley," to which my dad replied, "simmer down." Let's also not forget about athletic freak Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and three-point specialist Gabe York.
For Utah, pay attention to Junior Delon Wright, shooting over 60 percent despite a height (6-foot-5) indicative of a lower percentage.
With 15 points to play with, it's almost impossible not to pick Utah, who wasn't lost by more than four points all season.
