AMD RX Vega ‘Just Around The Corner’ With Different Memory Configurations; Arriving In Gaming Notebooks Too
ByAs launch is "just around the corner" according to AMD, more details have been revealed about the AMD RX Vega including a 4GB or 8GB second-generation High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) configuration. Moreover, Vega will be arriving in notebooks too as some Raven Ridge APUs will be featuring the upcoming graphics cards.
There is now more information about the AMD RX Vega as revealed in the technology summit in Beijing two weeks ago. Videocardz got hold of a video where Scott Herkelman, AMD's vice president and general manager of gaming spoke about the latest graphics cards. Herkelman confirmed that AMD's add-in-board partners will have the freedom to tweak Vega in varying memory configurations by using HBM stacks with different densities. Hence, there will be an 8GB and a 4GB of HBM2 or more like a 2-Hi, 4-Hi and 8-Hi stacks that will each have a 1GB memory per layer.
Previously, AMD has already revealed albeit unofficially that the high-end Vega chip has a measurement approximating ~500 mm² with two HBM2 stacks. This particular chip is actually configurable depending on the type of HBM2 used so it could come in 4GB, 8GB or 16GB of HBM2. No other details have been revealed but observers say that this graphic card will be most likely Vega 10. Meanwhile, Vega 11, the smaller GPU will only have one HBM stack that is specially designed to reduce the interposes footprint, according to wccftech.
The smaller AMD RX Vega or Vega 11 actually offers valuable benefits starting with a cheaper cost of production. It also delivers better yields with a much reduced overall package, making it ideal as the mobile GPUs. Meanwhile, Herkelman also announced that AMD will be bringing Vega in notebooks since HBM2 will be its chief selling point. It features the stacked VRAM chips will bring lots of saved space but also increased efficiency with AMD's 14nm node producing the best architecture ever built.
It is high time that AMD RX Vega gets into mobile gaming given its high performance at less power consumption. Vega in mobile gaming will once again solidify the platform's success even with the arrival of new consoles this year.
