A teen convicted of a series of crimes, including a gun ambush on a teenage couple and the theft of celebrity chef Guy Fieri's $200,000 sports car, was sentenced to life in prison Thursday, the Associated Press reported.
Max Wade, 19, who had been convicted of attempted murder and vehicle theft in October, was charged in Marin County superior court as an adult even though he was younger than 18 years old when the crimes were committed, the AP reported.
Judge Kelly Simmons told the Marin Independent Journal Wade's sentence was fair.
"It's a shocking case, and I'm sorry to be the judge who sentences such a young person to such a long sentence," Simmons said. "But he deserves it."
Wade will serve a separate sentence of 21 years and four months in prison, and then begin serving his life term sentence with the possibility of parole, the AP reported.
Wade's defense attorney Charles Dresow said he could apply for parole once his life term sentence begins, meaning he could theoretically be released from prison before he turns 40, Marin Independent Journal reported. Wade reportedly accrued two years' worth of credits from the time he has spent in jail since the case began.
At the sentencing hearing, Dresow argued that his client's sentence was unconstitutional under the eighth amendment ban on "cruel and unusual punishment," Marin Independent Journal reported.
Wade was convicted of firing at a truck occupied by two of his acquaintances - Landon Wahstrom, 18, and Eva Dedier, 17. Prosecutors alleged that Wade secretly desired Dedier and his jealousy prompted the drive-by shooting.
While detectives were investigating the shooting, they found Fieri's Lamborghini, which was stolen in 2011, in Wade's storage locker, the AP reported.
