Since speed is vital when it comes to dealing with the internet, Google has released a new open source JPEG encoder to reduce image file sizes while retaining the quality which allows business websites to load faster. The new software is not even closed to perfection but it's reportedly better than previous Google-made encoder.
Smaller Images Means Faster Website
When it comes to website optimization, images are considered vital in establishing someone's credibility across the internet. In relation to that, uploading quality images to website though considered beneficial, has its underlying consequence that could sway away readers.
The principle "the smaller the JPEGs, the faster the website loads" still applies today in almost all websites around the world. And since speed is very important in dealing things with the internet, Google has released a new open source JPEG encoder that could help business websites load faster despite the tons of images uploaded in the database.
Google claims that "Guetzli", a Swiss German word for "Cookie" can compress images up to 35 percent smaller than the recently available software while maintaining its quality. What's more interesting is that, the compressed images maintain the regular JPEG file and still made compatible with every existing applications and browsers, The Verge reported.
The Making of Guetzli
To be able to come up with a perceptually guided JPEG encoder, Google has used psychovisual model called "Butteraugli", a tool used for measuring presumed differences between images. According to Google Research Blog, Guetzli is practically similar to Zopfli algorithm which produces smaller PNG sizes and apparently different from RAISR, WebP and other RNN-based image compression algorithms.
With Guetzli, a 29 to 45 percent reduction in data size is achieved which is purportedly of higher quality than other JPEG files compressed by other methods. Slower speed in creating images is the only disadvantages that Google reported about the new encoder but they assure smooth and fast website uploading.
