University Of Michigan To Review Inclement Weather Policy After Remaining Open During Winter Storm
ByThe University of Michigan is reviewing its inclement weather policy after receiving many complaints from students and faculty for staying open during record-breaking low temperatures, The Ann Arbor News reported.
The town in which the school is located received more than ten inches of snow last week and temperatures plummeted to minus 15 degrees, severe wind chills made it feel like minus 45 degrees, making it one of the coldest in recent history for the area, The Ann Arbor News reported.
While, Ann Arbor Public Schools and Eastern Michigan University opted to have their schools closed during this weather on Jan. 6 and 7, the University of Michigan remained open.
According to the university's Provost Martha Pollack, part of the reason the university's Ann Arbor campus didn't close during subzero temperatures last week is because it doesn't have a plan in place.
"We didn't have the appropriate mechanisms, even if we wanted to close the university," The Ann Arbor News quoted Pollack as saying. "That said, after this was all over, I and some of the other executive officers really strongly believe that we ... need to revisit this policy."
According to the Ann Arbor News, if officials closed the campus several units would still have to function, including the health system, daycare staff, police officers and dining hall workers. Pollack said the university hasn't sorted its essential staff from its non-essential staff.
It has been 36 years since the university last closed its Ann Arbor campus due to inclement weather
"The university should only close in extreme circumstances," Pollack said. "One hopes that it is very rare. It's a big deal to close. It really is like closing a city. A small city."
Many students and faculty were not pleased with the university's campus remaining open.
Karen Staller, head of the faculty senate, told the Ann Arbor News that due to the school's inclement weather policy members of the university "risked themselves physically" to get to the university.
The university is expected to organize a committee to review closing guidelines.
