Gearbox Software developers of "Borderlands," in a panel during the Game Developers Conference held recently provided a tech-demo featuring Unreal Engine 4 it plans to use in future games.
Some insights were provided Gearbox previously used in developing "Borderlands" and the representation of its distinct look. However, Gearbox Software boss Randy Pitchford made it known repeatedly that was presented was a tech demo and not part of an actual game.
Pitchford discussed the edge outlining Gearbox has used in its past games, as well as, new tools employed that gave Gearbox artists ample flexibility. Although the Gearbox boss did not state that the elements used in the Unreal Engine 4 tech demo are part of "Borderlands 3," given the progression of development of techniques used for past games in the series, the assumption is not far off.
There were some assets shown in the presentation wherein Pitchford mentioned those may or may not be part of a future video game, Gamespot reported. A representation of a character model stand-in was shown and how its environment reacts to it. It also demo's the effects light sources produce with the Epic's Unreal Engine 4.
Attending fans during the conference took the demonstration as a confirmation that a new game is truly underway. It is understandable Pitchford would want to lay it low as the conference is not the proper venue to make the announcement, according to Screen Rant.
As far as followers are concerned, "Borderlands 3" is Gearbox's next game. The game was ahead of its time when it was first released. It still could make an impact if Gearbox releases soon, it might a tough sell if it decides to come out beyond 2017.
Meanwhile, though the Nintendo Switch uses the Unreal Engine 4, it might not come to the hybrid console. Pitchford said he does not see it coming. According to him, They were in talks with Nintendo, however, they simply stopped talking. Pitchford added Nintendo has other priorities.
