Seth Greenberg called Aaron Craft "the best point guard in college basketball" during a preview show on ESPN today. That could be true (if we're calling Marcus Smart a shooting guard) -- and a sign of how far the position has fallen. Nothing against Aaron Craft, whom I believe has a chance to become a solid backup point guard in the NBA on the basis of his defense, toughness, and smarts (and his ability to take his man off the dribble), but he's barely projected to get drafted according to most previews. (Nbadraft.net has him going to Denver with the second to last picks).

Yet, on a team of Ohio State's (15-0) talents, Craft is probably the guy you'd prefer over more talented, NBA-projected talents. Kansas, after all, has four guys expected to be taken in the first round, but four losses and no solid point guard; Kentucky has two of the most heralded point guard prospects in the country... and three losses. On the flip side, teams like Arizona and Florida have more-than-solid point guards (but not necessarily NBA prospects) leading uber-talented teams.

Michigan State (13-1) also has a pretty decent court leader in senior Keith Appling (15.6 ppg, 4.6 apg). Paired with sophomore Gary Harris (18.2 ppg, 2.9 apg), they form one of the best backcourts in the country. Tonight's matchup between the Spartans and the Buckeyes, and the matchup between Craft/Appling and Craft/Harris could be college basketball's greatest treat to date. Previous big time games between Arizona and Duke and Syracuse and Villanova were good. This one could be better, especially because it's in conference.

Coach Tom Izzo addressed that fact directly in a quote he gave to ESPN on Monday.

"It better not become another game," Izzo said. "Otherwise, that's disappointing. And yet again, you don't want it to be where it's the biggest game of the year because you do have to learn in this program you're going to have a lot of big games."

Against two future NBA players in Appling and Harris, take tonight to truly analyze Craft's game. Up until this point, he's had the feel of one of those guygs who will find a place at the next level and stick there for years. Tonight will be another step in proving his (and my) case.
