Michael Bay commented on his meltdown at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas via a blog post on his website, the Los Angeles Times reported (is it possible to blog on your own website?).
He didn't go as far as to apologize for exiting the stage when the teleprompter malfunctioned, but he did lend his endorsement to Samsung's curved mega-screen UHD TV.
"Wow! I just embarrassed myself at CES - I was about to speak for Samsung for this awesome Curved 105-inch UHD TV," Bay wrote. "I rarely lend my name to any products, but this one is just stellar. I got so excited to talk, that I skipped over the Exec VP's intro line and then the teleprompter got lost. Then the prompter went up and down - then I walked off. I guess live shows aren't my thing."
It's unclear whether the surly reputation Bay's at least temporarily established for himself is good or bad for Samsung's TV. On the one hand, Bay's clip shows himself to be a particular man (especially with technology) unafraid to voice his opinion with a reluctance to admit when he's wrong. Thus, his backing of an electronic product must mean it's good. On the other hand, Bay clearly owes Samsung, even if he might also be angry at them for botching the teleprompter.
Based on his second line, "I rarely lend me name to any products," perhaps he truly does believe in the product, and his way of lashing back at Samsung was not explicitly apologizing to them and audience members.
Bay's final line might add to that point. Even if Samsung is paying him a lot of money, directors, especially ones as consumed by special effects as Bay, can be picky with their technological choices. That Bay decided to use Samsung's TV to promote the upcoming Transformers sequel must mean he at least trusts their technology.
"But I'm doing a special curved screen experience with Samsung and Transformers 4 footage that will be traveling around the world," Bay wrote.
If only Bay had Sasheer Zumata's improve skills, he would have been more capable when the teleprompter malfunctioned.
