Apple vs Android: iOS Wins Christmas Day Online Shopping With More Sales and More Expensive Orders
ByOn Christmas Day, five times as many shoppers used Apple's operating system than Androids, despite Google coming out on top in overall market shares.
According to data gathered by IBM, 23 percent of all e-commerce orders were placed using Apple iOS, a mobile operating system. Comparatively, just four percent of those orders were placed on an Android mobile operating system.
The Los Angeles Times also reported that customers using an Apple device also spent more per order averaging just under $94 per transaction. Android users spent nearly half that amount, at $48 per order.
Even though Android has a larger market share than iOS does, developers are more likely to make a sale, and bigger one, on Apple's mobile operating system. Apple's iOS is only on its line of iPads, iPhones and certain iPods, whereas Android's mobile operating system is on a plethora of devices made by companies like Samsung, LG and many more. Therefore, Apple simply cannot compete in market shares of the mobile operating system, but the new data figures to play into the Cupertino, Calif. tech giant's favor. App developers can now see that users are more likely to make in-app purchases with an Apple device than they are with an Android device.
Further, IBM's data showed that online shopping was 16 percent on Christmas Day from last year, with about 48 percent of those customers using a mobile device. That means nearly half the people shopping online are using a smartphone or tablet versus a desktop computer or laptop.
Overall, online shopping for the holiday season was up 40 percent from last year. Smartphones accounted for just less than 29 percent of online traffic, while tablets made up 18 percent. Tablets, however, had a higher sales rate than smartphones, at 19 percent versus 9 percent, respectively.
In other words, when it came to browsing, more people used their smartphones, but more often used a tablet to make the purchase.
