Google today rolled out an update for the Android Google Maps that will give it a better interface, making it easier for users to check the traffic situation as well as transit times.

Finding nearby places is also expected to be easier with Google Maps' new tabbed interface.

"As with many Android apps in Google's repertoire, Maps seems to be... relying less on menus and more on more visually-pleasing and accessible tabs," Android Central said in its report.

Phone Arena noted that the update is "all about getting you to your destination faster, no matter whether you're on foot, by car, or public transit."

"It throws in some additional and useful info into the swipe-up menu at the bottom of the screen," it added.

In the lower part of Google Maps' updated interface are three tabs - "Places", "Driving", and "Transit".

The first tab, "Places", helps users search for venues or locations (restos, hotels, gas stations, police precincts and other places of interest) either via key words or proper names.

On the other hand, the "Driving" tab calculates estimated arrival times from point A to point B - complete with real-time information on traffic conditions and expected delays along the way.

The third tab, "Transit" lets commuters get detailed recommendations (as well as ETAs) on which mode of public transportation is the most optimal - when and where the chosen mode of transport will be at.

The way the app now works, complete with exact location directions, road conditions and updated public transport schedules might even give Waze a run for its money.

Android users simply need to go to the Google Play Store to update their Google Maps. The update takes just a few minutes due to the small size of the package.

There is currently no word as to when the iOS version will receive the update.
