P.J. Hairston's time playing basketball for the University of North Carolina (UNC) Tar Heels is coming to an end, ESPN reported.

The school announced they are not going to try and reinstate the junior guard with the NCAA after he missed ten games on an indefinite suspension. UNC had been investigating possible rules violations stemming from several traffic stops that revealed Hairston to be driving cars provided by third parties like a convicted felon named Haydn "Fats" Thomas.

Tar Heels head coach Roy Williams called the decision "probably the most difficult and saddest thing I've gone through as a head coach." He also noted Hairston was "the most dominating player on the perimeter in practice that I've ever coached."

"The actions were there," Williams said. "All of us in life pay for our actions, and these are some very difficult consequences that he's paid for his actions. I have no problem saying that. That's the very frustrating part. The very mad part. Like your children, you get very mad and very upset at their actions, but you still love your children."

Hairston led the team in scoring last season with 14.6 points per game and has been on the bench for every home game, as well as a participant in practice.

"We've taken a long time to get to this point," UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham said. "It's very disappointing for P.J. and his family. He has been terrific, as Roy has said, in the past six months in this entire process... We are not going to seek reinstatement for him."

Cunningham noted senior guard Leslie McDonald was reinstated recently, despite accepting improper benefits. He said whatever benefits Hairston received could not be precisely quantified, leading to the decision not to reinstate.

"P.J. made mistakes and I was very disappointed by his actions, and now he is suffering the very difficult consequences," Williams said in a statement. "He is not a bad kid; he just made some mistakes."

Williams added he had not spoken to Hairston at the time of his statement and Cunningham added he did not know what the young guard planned to do next. He did, however, say Hairston will have the team's support in whatever it is.
