'Cult of Chucky': Latest Cast & Producton Updates; What To Expect From 7th 'Child's Play' Title
BySeveral horror franchises continue to have its loyal following even if they don't come out with new titles for years. One of these could be the "Child's Play" franchise. Now, let's get to know more about movie number seven, "Cult of Chucky".
"Cult of Chucky": looking into Chucky's evolution
Per Screen Rant, the franchise's lead antagonist Chucky has gone through quite an evolution, starting out as a mostly serious serial killer turned doll in the original "Child's Play" film, before transitioning to a more Freddy Krueger-style murderous comedian in the first two sequels.
Then came 1998's "Bride of Chucky", which came out during the post-"Scream" era of slasher films. While mostly enjoyed by fans, "Bride" seemed to be the most outwardly silly entry in the series to date, and things only got a little weirder with 2005's "Seed of Chucky". Although, unfortunately, fans were vocal that they were a little turned off by the latter - even those who enjoyed "Bride".
After that, the "Child's Play" franchise lay inactive for almost a decade, before coming back with 2013's "Curse of Chucky". Here, "Curse" presented the pint-sized killer as more brutal and savage than he had been in many years - and Chucky's back. Will that upward trend continue? Many fans and Universal hopes so.
"Cult of Chucky": newest title's plot
So what's new with "Cult of Chuky"? The latest title centers on Nica Pierce (Fiona Dourif), who has been confined in an asylum for the criminally insane for the past four years. Pierce is convinced that she and not Chucky murdered her entire family.
Now, when her psychiatrist introduces a new therapeutic method to aid his patients' group sessions - a very familiar-looking Good Guy doll, that's when a series of gruesome deaths begins to pester the asylum. This is when Pierce reallizes she may not be crazy after all.
Chucky's now-grown-up nemesis, Andy from the original "Child's Play" comes to Nica's aid. But to save her, he'll have to get past Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly), Chucky's bride, who will do anything for him.
"Cult of Chucky": latest cast and production updates
According to Cleveland.com principal photography began earlier this month in Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada. A new cast member joined production as well. Toronto-born actress Grace Lynn Kung ("Miss Sloane") will be playing the role of Claire (via ComingSoon.net).
Making a comeback are Brad Dourif, Fiona Dourif, and Jennifer Tilly - playing Chucky, Nica and Tiffany, respectively, as well as Alex Vincent as Andy Barclay. Franchise writer Don Mancini is the executive producer of the new film, which he also directs from his original script.
"Cult of Chucky" releases with an Unrated Version on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD in fall 2017 - just in time for Halloween.
