Florida Vs. Memphis Preview, Prediction, And Live Stream: Mid-Ranked Teams Compete At Jimmy V Classic
ByThe matchup between #16 Florida and #15 Memphis in the second game of tonight's Jimmy V Classic pits two intriguing mid-ranked teams each with an impressive, non-conference victory. The Gators defeated #18 Kansas (7-3) 67-61 last Tuesday night and the Tigers won a revenge game vs. #7 Oklahoma State (9-1) on Dec. 1.
Yet, Florida would appear to be the stronger of the two teams at this point in the season as they dominated Kansas for most of that game and probably should have beaten #10 Connecticut (9-0) if not for Shabazz Napier's wild, last second shot. Their only other loss was at #4 Wisconsin (10-0). They also recently returned two key players, guard Scottie Wilbekin (18 points, 6 assists vs. Kansas) and forward Dorian Finney-Smith (11 ppg, 7.7 rpg). Both players missed the Wisconsin game, while Wilbekin was only in his third game back against UConn. Talent-wise, Florida is the superior team and their my pick to win tonight. They're favored by 2.5.
"It just feels like we're coming together as a whole," Wilbekin told ESPN.
Memphis is on a six game roll, including the big win against Oklahoma State, but played sloppy in their most recent 73-59 win against Arkansas-Little Rock in which they were down by seven at half. (For comparison, Florida beat them by 30 points earlier in the year).
"You have to be so ready to go," Tigers head coach Josh Pastner told ESPN. "Our guys came out, and I don't know what it was. They thought they could go away from the system that has been working for us."
With the suspensions of Finney-Smith and Wilbekin, 6-foot-6 senior forward emerged mostly out of nowhere (or, more accurately, the 6 ppg range) and has remained an offensive force even with their return. He didn't shoot his customary high percentage, but hit 10 free throws.
Both teams have lost their only games on the road season. One of them will be forced to win as they play at Madison Square Garden.
