Big Ten Championship 2013: Michigan State Students and Fans Celebrate Win With Fireworks and Couch Fires (PHOTO)
ByMichigan State University (MSU) students and fans took to the streets following the Spartans' Big Ten Championship win over the Ohio State Buckeyes, setting fire to couches and packing the streets full of rowdy roisterers.
According to MLive.com, the East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) made several arrests and could not give an exact total, but reported no injuries. Fans reportedly set numerous fires, especially to couches and set off fireworks, while thousands packed the streets.
With time winding down in the Big Ten Conference Championship, Fox captured a fan holding up a sign forecasting the raucous celebration. Somewhat of a tradition for MSU students after big football wins, the sign read, "Burn the Couch."
The ELPD and East Lansing Fire Department (ELFD) responded after the group of students and fans apparently originated outside the Cedar Village student apartments. According to WLNS, it is a popular area for these kinds of celebrations to begin.
The win dashed Ohio State's chances of a BCS National Championship bid and vaulted MSU into the Rose Bowl. Now, Ohio State will see Clemson Orange Bowl, Florida State will face Auburn for the title and MSU will matchup with Stanford for the Rose Bowl.
According to the Lansing State Journal, the police have announced their intention to press charges on whomever they can for the riotous celebrations.
"I am very proud of [MSU football head coach] Mark Dantonio, [MSU athletic director] Mark Hollis and our football program. They consistently represent Michigan State University with passion and class," MSU president Lou Anna Simon said in a statement.
"At the same time, the behavior last night on campus and in East Lansing by both students and non-students was disappointing," Simon said. "Unfortunately, the behavior of a small number casts doubt on many. These incidents will be reviewed within the appropriate legal and university processes and individuals will be held accountable. I ask that you join me in reinforcing that Spartans honor the success of our teams by celebrating with class."
