6 Whales Dead, More Than 30 Trapped Off The Coast of Florida's National Park (VIDEO)
BySix beached whales have died and more than 30 other whales are trapped in shallow waters off Florida's Everglades National Park, CNN reported.
Wildlife officials are trying to rescue the remaining pilot whales stranded in a remote area off the coast of the national park. About 20 to 30 of the sea creatures were found beached or trapped Tuesday by the park near Highland Beach in northern Monroe County, WPTV reported.
"This scenario is very challenging because of where they are," Blai Mase, a spokeswoman for the National Oceanic And Atmospheric Administration, told the Associated Press.
Mase said officials typically have access to heavy equipment to rescue stranded whales, but the area these whales are stuck in is accessible only by boat.
The whales are believed to have approached the beach at high tide, but were unable to leave in low tide, according to Linda Friar, spokesman for the Everglades National park.
The whales were discovered off the coast of West Everglades after a fishing guide reported seeing one of the whales Tuesday afternoon, Friar told CNN. The fish were 30 miles from land, Kim Amendola, spokeswoman for the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, told Philadelphia's Fox 29.
Wildlife workers were able to get about six of the beached whales back into the water, but four died on the beach, she said.
The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration launched a rescue mission Wednesday morning. Amendola told Fox 29 that until the team reaches the whales and assess the situation, they won't know whether it is possible to save the mammals.
According to CNN, the Marina Animal Rescue Society posted a call for trained volunteers to help save the stranded whales on Wednesday. Park rangers, along with the crews from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, are also attempting to rescue the whales.
