Oxford University Student Brings Flamethrower to Party As Part of an Arcade Fire Costume (PHOTO)
ByFor a recent party, a student at Oxford University wanted to dress up as Arcade Fire - the band, not any particular member - so to complete his outfit, he arrived to the event toting a flamethrower, the Telegraph reported.
Inigo Lapwood, 20, was attending Oxford's annual Christ Church party in the school's historic Tom Quad. He wore a shirt depicting an arcade game and shot fire into the air with his homemade flamethrower to signify the Canadian rock band Arcade Fire.
"I don't think it was dangerous," Lapwood, a second-year psychology and philosophy student, told the Telegraph. "I used it for about ten minutes, and it's not as though I set any of my friends on fire."
"I used it well away from anyone, I never took it inside and I dismantled it after I used it."
According to a report from student newspaper the Tab, the party and its open bar were sponsored by the Mercurials, a Christ College drinking society. Attendants reportedly left behind vomit in the bathrooms and a broken window. The police were not called at any point, but Oxford officials shut down the party before midnight.
ITV reported Lapwood will receive some form of punishment, but did not specify how severe.
"I understand there was an incident in the main quad at Christ Church outside the end-of-term party on Saturday," said the Very Reverend Christopher Lewis, dean of Christ Church. "The college is investigating and the student concerned will be disciplined."
The Firearms Act of 1968 classifies flamethrowers as a "prohibited firearm" and is punishable by a maximum of seven years in prison. It is still unclear if Lapwood will face criminal charges or just punishment from the school.
His original idea for the costume was based on a hit single from the U.S. rock band Kings Of Leon.
"I thought about doing the pun 'Sex is on Fire,'" Lapwood told the Telegraph, "but I think that one would definitely be going too far."
