A Miami-Dade County judge has sentenced Quentin Wyche, a 25-year-old former Florida International University student, to 20 ½ years in prison on Monday in the 2010 fatal stabbing of Kendall Berry, a school football player. Along with the jail term, Wyche was also given five years of probation.
Wyche admitted to stabbing Berry outside the Florida International University's main campus' recreation center in March 2010 with a pair of scissors. But the defense claimed that Wyche acted in self-defense when Berry with several teammates and more than a dozen of his friends attacked him.
Investigators said that the brawl started when Wyche insulted the running back's girlfriend, CBS Local reports.
During the trial on Monday, a former FIU student who witnessed the assault said that she heard Wyche saying, 'I'm gonna kill him.' Wyche freed himself from his attackers, picked up the scissors and attacked Berry.
Wyche also apologized to Berry's family.
"My answer for why I brought a pair of scissors was only to scare a group of men, but it ended up being the death of your son and I'm sorry for that," Wyche said. "I'm sorry for not giving my side of the story, if you want to hear it. It would have been the truth," Miami Herald reports.
"I made a mistake, I had no intention to hurt your son," Wyche said. "Now that I have the opportunity to speak, I want to say I'm really sorry for your son. I know the situation could have been easily avoided.
Berry, a former Haines City High School athlete, was a tailback on the FIU football team.
