Kanye West Speaks to Design Students At Harvard University (VIDEO)
ByKanye West stopped by Harvard University on Sunday to give a lecture to the Ivy League's Graduate School Of Design on his beliefs regarding design, USA Today reported.
"I really do believe that the world can be saved through design and everything needs to actually be architected," West told the students and reporters. "And this is the reason why even some of the first DONDA employees were architects that started designing T-shirts instead of buildings."
DONDA, is West's company that employs lawyers, musicians, architects, doctors and fashion, product and car designers. The company, which is named after his late-mother, was created to unite people who are in different career paths "to dream of, create, advertise, and produce products driven equally by emotional want and utilitarian need. To marry our wants and needs."
In his speech, West spoke to students about aspiring despite critics and disbelievers and having creativity.
"If I sit down and talk to Oprah for two hours, the conversation is about realization, self-realization and actually seeing your creativity happen in front of you," West said. "So the reason why I turn up so much in interviews is because I've tasted what it means to create and be able to impact, and affect in a positive way and I know that there's more creativity to happen. And I know that there's traditionalists that hold back the good thoughts and there's people in offices that stop the creative people, and are intimidated by actual good ideas."
He also spoke about his admiration for the student's work. According to Archinect, West purchased 300 tickets to his own show at Harvard for the university's design grad students.
"I'm very inspired to be in this space. Tonight, this show, if you come see it--um, I'm a bit self-conscious because I'm showing it to architects," he told students. "So the stage does have flaws in it. It's an expression of emotion so give me a pass on that. And that's basically all I have to say so thank you very much."
According to Archinect, it is possible that the school's Black Student Union had written to the rapper and producer a few weeks before to extend an invitation.
