Urban Meyer Displeased With Evan Spencer Claiming Ohio State Could 'Wipe the Field' With Alabama and Florida State
ByOhio State Buckeyes wide receiver Evan Spencer's heart may have been in the right place when he declared Ohio State could "wipe the field" with Alabama or Florida State, but his coach is not pleased.
ESPN reported the Buckeyes' head football coach Urban Meyer was "very disappointed" in Spencer's comments, which also happened to break the team's rules on public commenting. Although Meyer had previously said something to same effect, he did not care for the bravado set forth by his player.
"I'm very disappointed, I can't stand that," Meyer said during the Big Ten teleconference Tuesday. "Our players are taught [not to do that], and I know Evan well enough and I even talked to him briefly and he was kind of smiling the way he said it. But, no, I can't stand it."
Meyer said Monday in a press conference that he believed Ohio State is the rightful number-two team in the county behind Alabama and ahead of Florida State.
"I had us number two all year and I just think we're playing like one of the top teams in the country right now," Meyer said. "I believe we have Alabama, Ohio State, Florida State."
Still, the Buckeyes' coach did not appreciate one of his student-athletes acting as the mouthpiece of the team.
"He's certainly not the spokesman for our team. As a result, Evan won't talk to the media for a long, long time. You don't do that. It's not good sportsmanship, and that's not what we expect," Meyer said. "Talk about your teammates, talk about the team and move on."
Meyer reiterated the rule his team must follow: the only team anyone should talk about to the public is the Ohio State Buckeyes.
"What he believes, what goes on inside the locker room doesn't need to be in the papers and all that," Meyer said. "Every couple weeks I will remind them, but there's a pretty clear rule around here: You always talk about your teammates, talk about your team and you always are respectful of the team you are getting ready to play or the team you just played and the players. That's just the right thing to do."
