Ohio State Wide Receiver Says Buckeyes Would 'Wipe the Field' With Alabama and Florida State
ByBy just about any point of view, Ohio State rightfully deserves a third-place ranking behind Alabama and Florida State, but one Buckeye thinks it is two spots too low.
ESPN reported Ohio State Buckeyes' wide receiver Evan Spencer told reporters Monday that his team could easily take on and beat the two teams ranked first and second in the nation.
"I'm a little biased," Spencer said. "I think we'd wipe the field with both of them."
Alabama came off a win against LSU to remain the number-one team in the country. The Florida State Seminoles drubbed Wake Forest to stay unbeaten and grab the second overall ranking. Ohio State moved from number four to three with a 56-0 shutout of Purdue. The Seminoles and Buckeyes were both aided by Oregon's loss to Stanford, dropping the Ducks from two to six in the BCS rankings.
Spencer did not take back what he said, but took to Twitter to later apologize for how he presented his statement.
"I did not mean to disrespect any FB team today. I am confident in my team, and as is evident in the video, I was having fun," he wrote Monday night. "With the media answering their questions. I should have chosen my words more wisely. There was no intent to disrespect any other team."
The Buckeyes have won 21 games in a row and head coach Urban Meyer also expressed confidence in his football team.
"I have Ohio State in the top five," Meyer said during his weekly news conference Monday. "I believe we have Alabama, Ohio State, Florida State."
Of the top three teams, Meyer's has arguably the easiest schedule, facing Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. All three teams are not ranked in the top 25 and all have losing records within the Big Ten Conference.
Florida State will play Syracuse and Idaho before they finish their season going into Gainesville to face the SEC's Florida Gators. Alabama will see Mississippi State and Chattanooga before playing the seventh-ranked Auburn Tigers on the road.
"I had us number two all year," Meyer said, "and I just think we're playing like one of the top teams in the country right now."
