To bring fans to its opener on Friday night, the Kansas State women's basketball program will offer the first 1,000 attendees a free "boat of bacon" for attending the game, ESPN reported.
A "boat" serving consists of six slices of bacon, according to The Kansas City Star.
The school believes the uniqueness of the offer will be enough to attract students, who already have free admission to women's basketball games, according to ESPN.
"We have tried free pizza in the past as well as several other student promotions," Randy Peterson, K-State's sports information director for women's basketball, told the Kansas City Star. "As you know, students can get pizza anywhere. But, as a student, you have to go out of your way to get your hands on some bacon. You have to go to Aggieville and order a bacon cheeseburger or go to IHop and order breakfast. We thought it would be a good idea to offer bacon at one of our games.
"Bacon is very popular," he said.
At first, Kansas State's announcement avoided the hype and the school had planned for only 100 pounds of bacon, ESPN reported. Once news spread, the school decided to prepare 300 pounds so that no student would get less than the promised boat.
"Due to demand and the activity on social media, the bacon order has now increased from 100 pounds to 300 pounds," Peterson said.
"It has been a crazy last couple of days," Bethany Cordell, a graduate assistant in K-State's fan experience and sales office, told the Kansas City Star. "We knew it would be well-received by our students, but we couldn't imagine this much national attention. It is very exciting."
The Kansas State women's program has ranked among the top 35 in fan attendance for the last 12 years, according to ESPN. The Wild Cats are ranked outside the top 25 in preseason polls, but received a few votes in USA Today's rankings.
