The world's largest video game retailer announced on Monday that it will be playing it forward by joining in the fight against deadly childhood illnesses.

GameStop partnered with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to raise at least $500,000 in charitable donations for child cancer research as part of the annual Thanks and Giving campaign, according to a press release.

"We are passionate about giving back in our communities, and this is an excellent way for us to provide children with a better quality of life," Tony Bartel, president of GameStop, said in a statement. "I can honestly say that the work St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is doing is nothing short of miraculous. I have no doubt that we will exceed our goal this year and I'm looking forward to a long and successful partnership with St. Jude."

The fundraising effort involves a large union of celebrities, media, retail and corporate brands that come together to ask consumers to donate while shopping during the holiday season.

The St. Jude Thanks and Giving campaign's inception in 2004 began as a holiday-focused fundraising effort and has grown into an annual tradition that has raised more than #387 million for research and treatment in the ongoing battle to end childhood cancer.

Marlo Thomas, national outreach director for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and daughter of St. Jude founder Danny Thomas said in a statement that they are thrilled to have GameStop join the Thanks and Giving Campaign.

"Thanks to the generous support of partners like GameStop and its patrons, we can continue my father Danny Thomas' promise that no family ever pays St. Jude for anything," she said.

From Nov. 6 to Dec. 25, GameStop customers will have the opportunity to donate $1 to the children at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Target, Marshalls and Old Navy are some of the many retail stores also participating in the fundraising effort. This is GameStop's first time participating in the Thanks and Giving campaign.
