Northwestern Wildcats to Wear Red, White and Blue Uniforms in Nov. 16 Game Against Michigan For Wounded Warrior Project
ByThe Northwestern Wildcats have had a rough stretch of football games, but their next one will take on a much higher purpose than the game itself.
ESPN reported the Wildcats will ditch their purple to wear red, white and blue during their game Nov. 16 against Michigan to bring awareness and raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project.
Every last inch of the uniforms are patriotic with every spot of purple being replaced by the stars and stripes. Their typical black or white uniform body color has been replaced by gray. The uniforms are designed by Under Armour.
Also changed is the name on the backs of the jerseys. Instead of player's names, each will have "duty," "honor," "courage," "commitment," "integrity," "country" or "service" printed on the back.
"After Under Armour presented us with the different ideas they had, we had strong thoughts on making sure the red, white and blue matched throughout, that it looked like a complete uniform head to toe," Wildcats coach Pat Fitzgerald said.
After the game is played, the uniforms and their various pieces will be auctioned off through Northwestern University. All proceeds will go toward the Wounded Warrior Project, a nonprofit organization meant to benefit and enable military servicemembers wounded in battle.
The Wildcats suffered a heartbreaking 27-24 loss Saturday to Nebraska on a last-second Hail Mary touchdown pass. It was the fifth loss in a row for the Wildcats, a losing streak preceded by four straight wins to start their season. Now Northwestern is 4-5 overall and 0-5 in the Big Ten Conference.
Nov. 16's game will be a home game in Evanston, Ill. Michigan is also coming off of a loss to in-state rival Michigan State.
Before Northwestern's uniform change, Oregon did the same, only with the color pink to raise money and awareness for the fight against breast cancer.
