If fear is a pathway to relaxation, Halloween may be a more peaceful holiday than many believe.

That's the premise for an Indonesian massage parlor offering one hour snake massages.

According to staff at Bali Heritage Reflexology Spa in Jakarta, the snakes are supposed to stimulate adrenaline and boost metabolism, reported Medical Daily. Unlike most massage sessions, where patients let their mind wander, the presence of snakes keeps customers in the present moment. An hour truly feels like an hour at Bali Heritage.

Two masseuses operate on one patient. One places the snakes on the customer while the other may adjust the snakes position or massage in places the snakes aren't reaching, according to Medical Daily.

The snakes provide "slithering sensations" therapists can't, according to the spa's manager.

Bali Heritage uses ball pythons ranging in size to administer its special massage, which at $47 an hour, cost four times as much as an average massage in Indonesia, according to The Associated Press. Pythons are the snake of choice, mainly because they aren't poisonous. To make sure the constrictors don't treat Bali's customers as prey (by suffocating them and eating them whole), they're fed 30 minutes before sessions and their mouths are taped shut.

Python massages have no true scientific backing, nor has any group of researchers tested their impacts, but one study from Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark found a link between increased adrenaline and metabolic processes like lactic acid release from muscles and the breakdown of lipids, Medical Daily reported.

Medical Daily points out the most likely beneficiaries of python massages are thrill seekers who feed off the hour-long adrenaline trip only to feel enormous relief when the session is over.

The massages are quite the attraction. As you can see from these pictures, people take pictures of friends or family members as they relax with the snakes. The spa also uses green boa constrictors for variety.

Bali Heritage offers other unique massages without any medical backing like a beer bath and a $30 session involving warmed golf balls.
