Z Nation is expected to be renewed even before its Dec. 16 season 3 finale after Syfy has ordered a 13 episode for its season 4. The new season is scheduled to start airing next year.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Z Nation has been a steady performer for the NBC Universal-owned cable network. Ever since it debuted on Syfy, it consistently ranks among cable's top 10 most-watched scripted series. It has an average of 1.2 million viewers and 500,000 of them are in the 18-49 year old age range. Its Nov. 18 episode ended up becoming a live-plus-three-day lift.

Z Nation stars Kellita Smith, DJ Qualls, Kieth Allan, Anastasia Baranova, Nat Zang and Emilio Rivera. The TV series follows a group of heroes struggling to survive after a zombie apocalypse wiped out almost the entire nation. The group discovers a zombie survivor (Allan) and tries to bring him to a viral lab but not everything goes according to plan as sides are formed when they decide what they want to do in order to survive, according to Deadline. Other co-stars include Nat Zang, Emilio Rivera, Anastasia Baranova and Russell Hodgkinson.

The renewal comes in the heels of SyFy doubling the amount of their science fiction fare that is similar to Battlestar Galactica in the past few years. The network found success with this tactic as it was able to produce good ratings for shows such as 12 Monkeys, Dark Matter, The Expansse, The Magicians, Van Helsing, anthology Channel Zero and Wynonna Earp.

Z Nation is produced by The Asylum with Karl Schaefer of Eureka, The Dead Zone and Eerie Indiana fame serving as the executive producer and showrunner of the TV show. The finale of season 3 is scheduled to air on Dec. 16, 9 p.m. ET/PT on Syfy.
