As opposed to being macho characters that hide their feelings, men admit they enjoy a hug as much as women do, according to a new study the Daily Mail reported.

New research found that most men are happy to admit they frequently need a cuddle amid their busy lifestyle and hectic work schedules.

In their hour of need, men also turn to music, fresh air and time with their friends.

"Little things mean a lot in life, and many of them are free: walking outdoors or listening to our favorite music both work by calming us through using our senses of sight, sound, smell and taste," Psychologist Donna Dawson told the Daily Mail. "And heightening our senses can, in turn, lift our spirits, especially on those dark miserable days of winter."

Dawson adds that touch is the number one "mood changer" because it is the most powerful sense of them all.

"When the skin is rubbed, it produces hormones and enzymes that boost the immune system and increases feelings of well-being," she said. "Women's brains are naturally more 'wired' to be receptive to touch - which is why they find hugging easier to do."

In addition to also indulging in music, fresh air, and physical contact during their hour of need, women also admitted they reach for a cup of tea when they are gloomy, while chatting to a friend on the phone and watching their favorite TV program, the Daily Mail reported.

The study also examined the people men and women confide in on bad days. Forty-one percent of people said their other half provides the most meaningful support.

Men find their partner slightly more supportive than women do with 45 percent versus 39 percent of women, stating they are the ultimate cheer-giver.

According to the Daily Mail, next in the list came "a best friend", with 10 percent of men and 16 percent of women stating that they are their first choice of support.

By contrast, fathers are low down on the list with just one percent of respondents saying they would seek out paternal reassurance when feeling down. This compares to seven per cent of people who turn to their mother..
