Oregon Ducks Football Team Joins Kay Yow Fund, Unveils Pink-Accented Uniforms for Saturday's Home Game (PHOTOS)
ByThis Saturday, the Oregon Ducks will host the Washington State Cougars, but will playing on the field for a much bigger cause off the field.
According to a news release, the Ducks have once again teamed up with Nike to create pink-accented uniforms in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, held every October.
The Ducks football team will participate in a nationwide initiative known as the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. The team will wear pink helmets, socks, cleats and gloves while playing and various pieces of equipment will be auctioned off during the game and the following week. All proceeds of the auctions will benefit the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
"Cancer has touched so many lives and hopefully, together with Nike and the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, we can help create awareness and help raise money for the fight against women's cancers," said Oregon Football Head Coach Mark Helfrich. "It is an honor to join Coach Yow's team in a fight that unites us all."
Kay Yow was the head coach of the NC State women's basketball team from 1975 to 2009. She died from stage-four breast cancer on Jan. 24, 2009 less than a month after taking a leave of absence from her team. Yow became a symbol for the fight against breast cancer for her career dedication and success and when she coached the U.S. national women's basketball team to a gold medal in the 1988 Olympics despite already being diagnosed.
"Coach Yow knew that if motivated coaches, their student-athletes and a dedicated community came together, they could enact meaningful change on and off the playing field," said Sue Donohoe, executive director, Kay Yow Cancer Fund. "The collaboration between Nike, the University of Oregon and the Kay Yow Cancer Fund exemplifies this spirit of teamwork and generosity, and will enable the Kay Yow Cancer Fund to continue its battle against women's cancers."
Starting at the 7 p.m. PST time of kickoff Saturday, five helmets will be auctioned off every day for five consecutive days. Also auctioned off will be autographed versions from coach Helfrich and Oregon greats like Dan Fouts, Joey Harrington, Ahmad Rashad and Phil Knight.
