It will cost $250,000 for virtually anyone to travel to space when Virgin Galactic launches its first commercial flights next year, according to Reuters. For one lucky person, the trip will be free.

From Mark Burnett aka "the guy who created 'Survivor' and 'The Voice'" comes a new reality show called "Space Race" with the grand prize a trip to space. Burnett made the announcement last Thursday, Reuters reported.

"For the past 10 years I have relentlessly pursued my dream of using a TV show to give an everyday person the chance to experience the black sky of space and look down upon mother Earth," Burnett said in a statement.

Burnett has been constructing space shows since 2000, only to be shut down by bad timing. That year, he sold a show called "Destination Mir" to NBC for around $40 million dollars - $20 million of which was supposed to go to the company expected to carry out the flight until it closed in 2001, reported TV Guide.

Later, he reportedly had a deal in the works with a Russian space station, but enthusiasm among network officials waned following the 2003 Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, according to TV Guide.

"The scope of this endeavor is so staggering, that it took these two titans to even imagine it," Paul Telegdy, president of alternative and late night programming at NBC Entertainment, told TV Guide. "This will be a remarkable experience for anyone who has looked at the night's sky and dared to dream of space flight."

The other titan Telegdy is referring to is Richard Branson, owner of Virgin Galactic and co-creator of "Space Race".

According to TV Guide, Branson will bring his family on the company's first scheduled flight on Dec. 25. Passengers will fly for two hours and climb 62 miles above Earth's atmosphere. "They'll experience weightlessness and witness Earth's curve," wrote TV Guide. Alcoholic beverages will most likely not be permitted.

"Virgin Galactic's mission is to democratize space, eventually making commercial space travel affordable and accessible to all," Branson said. "Space Race allows us to extend this opportunity of a lifetime to as many people as possible right at the start of our commercial service - through direct experience and television viewing."

Over 600 people have already signed up for a flight, including celebrities Tom Hanks, Ashton Kutcher, and Angelina Jolie.

The reality show will appear on NBC, reported TV Guide.
