Detroit Lions Center, Dominic Raiola, Verbally Assaults University Of Wisconsin Band Members At Packers Game
ByThe University of Wisconsin band played at Lambeau Field on Sunday during the breaks between Green Bays' win over the visiting Lions. Not everyone welcomed their distraction.
According to a report by ESPN, Detroit Lions starting center Dominic Raiola hurled verbal insults at members of Wisconsin's band. Raiola's words focused on the sexuality and physical appearance of the band members, according to ESPN.
You couldn't even blame the incident on frustration. Raiola, whose Lions were division co-leaders at 3-1, began his verbal assault long before the team's 22-9 loss. Maybe he was upset about Calvin Johnson's last minute exit from the lineup.
According to Michael Leckrone, the director of bands at Wisconsin, the incident began during the pre-game show just before the national anthem. Leckrone didn't hear it himself, but was approached by brass and, well, whistle blowers shortly after.
"The band was lined up in the end zone preparing to finish 'The Star-Spangled Banner,' which would complete the pregame, and basically they were verbally assaulted by a member of the Detroit Lions team," Leckrone said. "To their credit, they just stood there and did what they were supposed to do, which is focus on their performance.
"I think they were a little bit shaken by it, and they reported it to me after the conclusion of the pregame show, and we were back in our seats," he said.
Verbal attacks against band members is not completely rare at football games, which is why Leckrone trains his students to handle these types of situations, according to ESPN.
The Detroit Lions issued a statement on Monday to the University of Wisconsin band, reported ESPN.
"Earlier today, we received a call from Lions president Tom Lewand," the statement read. "He has apologized for the actions of his player and has assured us that further discussion will take place. We appreciate the Lions' efforts to investigate this further and are grateful to Mr. Lewand for his concern."
Raiola, though not in the same league as the on-field beleaguered DT Ndamukong Suh, has been fined for such incidents before. In 2008 and 2010 he was fined for verbal altercations with fans, according to ESPN.
