'The Little Mermaid' Legal Contract Not Binding: Ariel A Minor, Ursula A Bully; Twitter User Offers Legal Advice [VIDEO]
ByA graduate law student took to Twitter to analyze the legal contract drawn by Ursula and Ariel in Disney's "The Little Mermaid. Contract is not binding since Ariel is a minor and Ursula breached the contract by hindering Ariel to have her true love's kiss.
People always enter into legal contracts for various things like in buying a house, landing a job, or in exchanging services for a fee. Ariel in "The Little Mermaid" also entered into a legal contract by exchanging her voice for a pair of human legs.
However, not all legal contracts are the same. It is always wise to seek legal advice and understand every stipulation to assess your legal rights. Since Ariel is only 16 and clearly have no access to legal counsel, Shon Faye took to Twitter to look into the mermaid's case as reported by Bustle.
Faye is a graduate law student, a comic and a writer as written in her profile description. Below are her findings on the errors of the legal contract between Ariel and Ursula that could have made the little mermaid's life easier and less stressful.
Faye starts with the fact that Ariel is a minor, which allows her to make any contract voidable at any time she chooses. Ursula's condition of taking Ariel's soul if she fails in kissing Prince Eric within three days is erroneous and unreasonable. Ariel could choose to remove the stipulation or seek recourse to the proper authorities like the Ombudsman.
Ursula also has "contractual duty to act in good faith." Everybody knows she did not and even capsize the boat to stop the impending kiss. This is clearly a breach of her duty and "no court at sea" will grant her claim.
Last and perhaps the most important of all, King Triton holds absolute power, allowing him to render any contract void at any time. King Triton is actually more than a king, he is a god and the son of Poseidon. He holds dominions over the seas according to Theoi. However, all is well at the end for Ariel eventually got her voice back and even a pair of legs courtesy of her father, King Triton.
