The University of California (UC), Berkeley campus was evacuated Monday night due to explosions that caused several injuries and a power outage, the Daily Californian reported.

University spokesman Dan Mogulof said three were treated on the scene for injuries while one was transported to a hospital for minor burns. At least 20 people were stuck in elevators as a result of the power outage, but they were all successfully rescued.

An initial power outage began at 4:45 p.m. and the explosion came when engineers attempted to restore power to the campus.

Last week, campus officials said vandals attempted to steal copper grounding wire from an electrical system not regularly visible. The explosion appears to be related, as the damage done by the vandalism is more severe than previously believed. The explosion originated underground beneath a road near California Hall, which lies toward the center of campus.

"At first, I was really scared because I thought the explosion was big enough to produce a shock wave," said sophomore Jennifer Han, who was walking home from a midterm when the explosion happened. "You heard it first, and then there were flames."

Police units, ambulances and fire trucks arrived on the scene and everyone on campus were instructed to evacuate through the west and east ends immediately. Because of the nature of the explosions, people were also warned to stay away from manhole covers.

As of 11 p.m., the school was still without power and administrators were unsure about the status of classes Tuesday.

"We're in uncharted territory," Mogulof said at a press conference Monday night. "We've never seen anything like this before."

The school announced on its website at 5:30 a.m. that most of the buildings on campus had power restored to them. The public release listed 11 buildings still without power and that students should assume all classes in those buildings will be cancelled for the day.

Residence halls and dining services were also affected, but both received partial power Monday night.
