Lane Kiffin Fired: Did Arizona State's 28-0 Third Quarter Run Spur Pat Haden to Remove the Trojans' HC?
ByUniversity of Southern California (USC) athletic director Pat Haden has finally seen enough of Lane Kiffin, firing him hours after Saturday's loss to Arizona State.
According to ESPN, Haden fired Kiffin in the USC Trojans' private airport terminal not even six hours after the team lost 62-41 on the road against Arizona State. Kiffin reportedly spent 45 minutes during the meeting early Sunday trying t change Haden's mind, but to no avail.
Ed Orgeron was named interim head coach for the Trojan's remaining eight regular season games and whatever postseason games they may reach.
"I want to tell you we're here as a staff to answer the bell," Orgeron said. "We're all accountable for what happened as a staff and as players. Us Trojans know how to do it."
Orgeron, former coach at Mississippi State and Kiffin's assistant head coach, will take over a 3-2 Trojans team that is 0-2 in Pac-12 divisional games this year.
Kiffin spent four years at the helm of the Trojans football team and accumulated 28-15 record, while weathering a storm left by Pete Carroll when he left for the NFL.
Carroll left in Jan. 2010 just ahead of the NCAA announcing sanctions for recruiting violations committed by his staff. Kiffin took over a team facing a two-year bowl ban and the loss of 30 scholarships. Despite the difficult situation, Haden said he has not been confident in Kiffin since the first game of this season.
"I haven't felt particularly good even from the Hawaii game," Haden said. "I just felt like we haven't been the consistent team that we need to be at USC. We've played 125 years of some pretty dog-gone good football here at USC. We're just all a piece of the continuum. We're going to be playing football 125 years from now. I was just a tiny little piece of it, Lane was, Pete Carroll was, and we all add up into this continuum of USC football, and we just realized that our history has been great, and we need to be great again."
Sources told the Los Angeles Daily News that Haden consulted with two USC administrators in the team's locker room at Sun Devil Stadium during an Arizona State 28-0 run in the third quarter. At that point, the decision was reportedly made to fire Kiffin.
Haden said he already has a list of favorites for the position, but that he would also accept applications from anyone interested.
