Samsung rolls out the world's first 8GB LPDDR4 DRAM package, a memory chip with twice the capacity and speed of a typical DRAM that are used in personal computers.

The new 8GB LPDDR4 (low power, double data rate 4) DRAM is making a practical use of the new 10-nanometer-class process technology, wherein the technology doubles up the capacity of the previous 20 nanometer process chips. The package of the dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) is 15mm x 15mm x 1.0mm in size. The South Korean tech company now plans to boost up its use of 10nm process technology all the way through its fabrication plants, Computer World has learned.

The South Korean tech giant stated in a press release that their 8GB DRAM package was tested to operate up to 4,266 Mbps, which doubles up the speed of the previous DDR4 memories. The 8GB DRAM package will enable virtual machine operation, as well as making 4K UHD video playback and popular features of many premium PCs smoother.

The Executive Vice President of Memory Sales and Marketing at Samsung Electronics, Joo Sun Choi, stated that the advent of the company's powerful 8GB mobile DRAM solution will enable more capable next-generation, flagship mobile devices across the globe. Choi also said that they will continue to bring forth advanced memory solutions that offers the highest values, and leading-edge benefits to meet the rapidly increasing needs of devices having dual camera, 4K UHD and VR features, Samsung reported.

Anyway, while a bunch of high-end, ultra-slim notebook PCs is currently using 8GB of DRAM, Samsung's state-of-the-art 8GB LPDDR4 package will be of service to other next-generation mobile devices to take the full advantage of its extremely high capacity.

That being said, after the memory will hit the market, high-end smartphones will have the RAM memory just like any other premium laptops.
